Our brilliant Trichogramma Moth Egg Killer sachets will kill the egg stage of the pest, while the Carnation Tortrix Moth Pheromone Trap will catch and kill the male adult moths.

The bundle provides a perfect natural solution to your Carnation Tortrix Caterpillar & Moth infestations and will help you to combat larger, or multiple, areas of infestations.

The Carnation Tortix Moth Control Bundle includes:

  • 1 Carnation Moth Egg Killer Sachet to release trichogramma wasps which will parasitise the Carnation Tortrix Moth eggs. This will reduce caterpillar development and reduce pest populations.
  • 1 Carnation Tortrix Moth Pheromone Trap to catch and kill adult male Carnation Tortrix Moths. The trap includes 1 sticky pad insert and 2 Carnation Tortrix Moth pheromone lures.

What Are Carnation Tortrix Caterpillars?

The Carnation Tortrix Caterpillars are a regular pest of ornamental plants and will attach a wide range of herbaceous plants and shrubs. The caterpillars feed on the upper surface of leaves, making holes and turning the leaves brown.

Identifying Carnation Tortrix Caterpillars & Moths

Carnation Tortrix Caterpillars are pale green with brown heads, and can grow up to 20mm in length. As the caterpillars get larger they wrap leaves around their bodies and will hide in the rolled leaf. If disturbed the caterpillars will wriggle and move backwards, they can also drop from leaves on silken webs.

The Carnation Moth is small with a wingspan of 15-25mm. The wings are folded horizontally over the body and are brown in colour with orange hindwings. Each female can lay up to 700 eggs. These are laid in batches on the upper surfaces of leaves. There can be several generations of moth each year and this can continue at any time in the year if they are attacking plants growing in heated glass.

How Do I Treat My Carnation Tortrix Moth Infestation Using This Bundle?

1. Firstly, use our Carnation Tortix Moth Pheromone Traps:

The first step in protecting your plants is to set up your Carnation Tortrix Moth Trap. This will assist you in catching, monitoring and killing male Carnation Tortrix Moths. Once these adult moths are observed, it is likely that the Carnation Tortrix Moth caterpillars will follow a few weeks later. By pre-empting their activity, and reducing moth numbers, you will have a greater chance of limiting a severe infestation. Moth mating and egg laying will also be reduced as a result.

2. Next, apply the Carnation Moth Egg Killer Sachet:

Carnation Moth Egg Killer Sachets can be used as an effective form of biological control against developing Carnation Tortrix Moth eggs. The Carnation Moth Egg Killer sachets used for Carnation Tortrix control contain Trichogramma evanescens, which are tiny wasps that parasitise the eggs of the Tortrix Moth. The Trichogramma will lay their own eggs inside the Tortrix eggs, killing the developing Tortrix caterpillar and reducing future pest numbers. Apply the Carnation Moth Egg Killer sachets as soon as male Tortrix moths are observed and caught in your pheromone traps.

3. Continue to re-use your pheromone trap and replace your Carnation Moth Egg Killer Sachet after 4 weeks if Tortrix Moths reappear

You may wish to reactivate your pheromone trap if infestations continue or build up again. The trap can be used for years and replacement lures can be purchased.  Each trap comes with two pheromone lures, each of which last up to 6 weeks, giving the trap an initial 12-week protection. Replacement lures can be purchased separately. If you require replacement lures, you can find these here.

Replacement sticky cards can be purchased here.

From each sachet 6000 parasitic wasps will emerge over a period of three weeks. The sachet is recommended to cover an area of 25m2We advise you to check pest numbers after application and consider applying more Trichogramma if numbers of Carnation Tortrix Moth remain high. For ongoing control, it is advised to replace the sachets every four weeks. You can purchase replacement or additional Carnation Moth Egg Killer Sachets here.

When Should I Start Using My Bundle?

For external use, the trap should be placed outside from May onwards.

For internal use, the trap can be used all year round.

The sachets are suitable for internal and external use. They will be most effective, however, if used against Carnation Tortrix caterpillars when identified in indoor environments such as greenhouses, glasshouses and polytunnels as this is where is the pest is most commonly frequented. The Moth Egg Killer Sachets can also be used all year round.
