What Are Clothes Moths?

The most prevalent Clothes Moth in the U.K. is the Tineola Bisselliella. The larvae of such Clothes Moth will damage a variety of garments, particularly those of natural origin, such as natural woolCarpets are also subject to attack and infestation. Warm, contained settings such as wardrobes, cupboards and airing cupboards also provide an ideal environment for the larvae to develop. The larvae often produce a silk web that is much larger than the larvae itself. Clothes Moth can be active all year round between the temperatures of 15-33℃.

How Do The Traps Help Combat Clothes Moth Infestations?

The Clothes Moth larvae cause most damage, as adult male moths are primarily concerned with locating females to mate with. After mating, the female moths will search for suitable egg laying sites. Our Clothes Moth Pheromone Trap offers a safe and natural way to trap and catch the male adult Clothes Moth, preventing them from mating with the females, and reducing the overall Clothes Moth population.

A pheromone lure is placed on the sticky surface inside the trap which gives off a sex pheromone that attracts the male Clothes Moth. The moths are then caught on the sticky surface inside the trap where they soon die. The traps can catch high numbers of Clothes Moths which results in reduced moth mating, egg laying, and infestation levels.

The pheromone lure that Dragonfli supplies will attract and catch the three main Clothes Moth species, which alternative Clothes Moth lures do not always achieve. The species our lure catches are listed below:

  • Webbing Clothes Moth (Tineola bisselliella)
  • Case Making Clothes Moth (Tinea pellionella)
  • Pale Backed Clothes Moth (Monopis cracicopitella)

Our trap is highly effective, insecticide free and releases no odours.

How Do I Set Up The Traps?

Our traps are very simple to assemble. Firstly, open the foil sachet and remove the pheromone lure. Next, place the lure inside the trap. It does not matter which way round the lure goes. Finally, remove the covering paper from the sticky trap and push the trap together.

Where Should I Place The Traps?

Place your trap in areas such as; wardrobes, large drawers, cupboards, or near materials that require protection and have suffered previous damage. If you have natural carpets, these also provide ideal egg laying sites for the Clothes Moth, so you may also wish to place a trap in such an area. The traps can be hung up or placed on a flat surface.

How Many Traps Do I Need?

One trap is sufficient for one particular infestation area. To cover larger areas we suggest one trap every 25m2.

When Should I Use The Traps?

Clothes Moths can be active all year round at indoor temperatures, so set up the trap whenever you wish to control your infestation.

When Will I Need To Replace My Traps?

To keep each trap active, replace the first pheromone lure after 6 weeks, and use the second lure provided. Each trap is supplied with two lures to give each trap a minimum of 12 weeks catching time. When the traps are full of moths, replace them with new traps.

You can purchase replacement Clothes Moth lures here.

Can I Store The Pheromone Lures?

If lures are to be stored and not used upon receipt, you may store them in a fridge or freezer.

For Complete Control Apply The Traps With Our Clothes Moth Egg Killer Sachets

Trichogramma are very small parasitic wasps, almost impossible to see with the naked eye. They seek out Clothes Moth eggs and lay their own eggs inside them, parasitising the Clothes Moth eggs. They are harmless to humans and animals and remain only for as long as there are Clothes Moth eggs present.

Combine use of our Trichogramma Sachets and Clothes Moth Traps for total control over your Clothes Moth infestation.

Please do not release the Trichogramma wasps close to the traps. They will not be attracted to the traps but may fly in by accident and get stuck on the glue. Place the sachets away from where you have set up your traps.

Very helpful to track and prevent moth infestation

I probably started to use these moth traps too late to fully treat a severe moth infestation in my all-wool carpets. At the worst point I caught over a hundred moths in one week in traps around the flat. Eventually I had to resort to a professional insecticide spray treatment two years ago, and I was certain that the moths would return.

I continued to monitor the moth levels carefully with the traps, catching the ones that had survived, and also later used the trichogramma sachets, to finish off any remaining unhatched moths before they appeared.

After the spray treatment I was still trapping 10-20 moths per week for the first 3 months, but then the number of moths caught reduced every week until, two years later, I have caught none at all for more than four months, using a trap continuously in each room of my flat.

I thought that the moths would reappear after the chemical spray lost its effectiveness (it is only potent for a few months), but the traps and parasitic wasps HAVE worked. I am so thankful. I thought that I would have to replace my carpet with something that moths don't eat.

It seems like it's a very slow process to completely eliminate them after such a severe infestation, especially if, like me, you live in a large complex of apartments where they can transfer easily. But my experience suggests that it is possible to get rid of them without resorting to repeated chemical treatment, which is bad for the environment and bad for me, as well as being very expensive.

I will continue to use the traps as a preventative and so that I'm aware of any increase, when I can also introduce trichogramma sachets again.

    Seems to work

We never had an infestation of moths, just a few here and there, which unfortunately meant a few holes here and there in our clothes. These flies seem to keep the moths at bay. We're on our fourth batch of sachets and will continue to buy them.

    Essential Traps

Essential for us to monitor and hopefully reduce moth population after damage from attacks over several years.

    Pesky munchers

I have been besieged by carpet/clothes moths since 2020. The local Council would not come around during lockdown and therefore the pesky munchers got truly established. I tried cedar-wood blocks, essential oils, sticky traps, lures, spraying with dilute vinegar around skirting boards, daily vacuuming etc. etc. I caught lots of moths in the traps but could not improve this significantly. Last year I tried the mini wasps and things improved. This year I tried the wasps followed by the lure traps using the ‘bundle’ offer. At first, I seemed to see more moths than ever flying around in the evenings. Then I found lots of dead moths lying around. Finally, I see very few moths caught in the traps. I am assuming that a cycle has been broken and I am on a wait and see watch now.
