What Are Carnation Tortrix Caterpillars?

The Carnation Tortrix Caterpillars are a regular pest of ornamental plants and will attach a wide range of herbaceous plants and shrubs. The caterpillars feed on the upper surface of leaves, making holes and turning the leaves brown.

Identifying Carnation Tortrix Caterpillars & Moths

Carnation Tortrix Caterpillars are pale green with brown heads, and can grow up to 20mm in length. As the caterpillars get larger they wrap leaves around their bodies and will hide in the rolled leaf. If disturbed the caterpillars will wriggle and move backwards, they can also drop from leaves on silken webs.

The Carnation Moth is small with a wingspan of 15-25mm. The wings are folded horizontally over the body and are brown in colour with orange hindwings. Each female can lay up to 700 eggs. These are laid in batches on the upper surfaces of leaves. There can be several generations of moth each year and this can continue at any time in the year if they are attacking plants growing in heated glass.

What Are Trichogramma Parasitic Wasps & How Can They Help?

Trichogramma are very small parasitic wasps, hard to spot with the naked eye, but identifiable when they are situated on the outside of the packaging. They will seek out  Carnation Tortrix Moth eggs and lay their own eggs inside them, parasitising the Carnation Tortrix Moth eggs. They are harmless to humans and animals and remain only for as long as there are Moth eggs present. Our Carnation Tortrix Moth Egg Killer Sachets can be used to combat a wide variety of moth pest species that also include the Clothes / Carpet Moth, Box Tree Moth and the Pantry Moth.

Carnation Tortrix Moth Egg Killer Sachets Release More Wasps & Kill More Moths

Our new Carnation Tortrix Moth Egg Killer Sachets have been designed for improved and longer lasting control of Carnation Tortrix Moth and other moth eggs.

Carnation Tortrix Moth Egg Killer is supplied in a sachet containing the eggs of the tiny parasitic wasp: Trichogramma evanescens. Theses eggs hatch from the sachet over a period of 2-4 weeks releasing a continual supply of adult parasitic wasps into the surrounding area. The sachet has been developed with a focus on timed emergence with 2000 wasps emerging each week. It will usually take 2-3 days for the first adults to emerge.

The longer lasting hatch rate increases the ability of the parasitic wasps to locate more moth eggs, and at that the correct time for when they can be successfully parasitised and killed. The Carnation Tortrix Moth Egg Killer Sachets also release 3x the amount of parasitic wasps than the previously sold Trichogramma Cards.

Sachets Ideal For Application In Greenhouses To Combat Tortrix Moths

Carnation Tortrix Moths are most widely identified in indoor environments so we strongly advise that you apply the sachets against the Carnation Tortrix caterpillars in greenhouses, glasshouses, polytunnels or in any other respective indoor growing environments.

Recent research has shown that the Trichogramma parasitic wasps like to fly upwards when they emerge from the sachets. For this reason the sachet has been designed without a hook so that it can be laid flat. The wasps will walk out of the sachets first and spread out horizontally before they fly, so by placing the sachets horizontally on a low level in the greenhouse you will ensure best results.

The sachets are supplied with a release hole on the top of the sachet, which is marked and already open. There is no need to open or cut the sachet.

The Benefits Of Carnation Tortrix Moth Egg Killer Sachets:

  • Up to 6,000 Trichogramma wasps per sachet
  • Trichogramma wasps released gradually from the sachets for up to four weeks.
  • Introductions required only once every four weeks.
  • Supplied as UK native species: Trichogramma evanescens

When Should I Use The Sachets?

Carnation Tortrix Moths can be active all year round at indoor temperatures, and so too can these wasps. The trichogramma wasps require temperatures between 15-35℃ and will be able to combat re-emerging infestations of the Tortrix caterpillars throughout the year.

How Do I Apply The Sachets?

The Trichogramma pupae are supplied in a paper sachet. Place the sachet on a horizontal surface at the site of infestation. Please be careful not to block the emergence hole. The wasps will emerge from inside the sachet and seek out the moth eggs.

As the small adult wasps tend to fly upwards, place the sachet low.

Please do not open the sachets since the sachets are supplied with an emergence hole. Please also do not place objects on top of the sachets as you may damage the pupae inside.

Please ensure no chemical treatments have been used prior to the introduction of Trichogramma. If you have used insecticides recently and are unsure how long the residues will remain, feel free to contact us

How Many Sachets Do I Need?

From each sachet 6000 parasitic wasps will emerge over a period of four weeks. One sachet will cover an area of 25m2.

We advise you to check pest numbers after application and consider applying more Trichogramma if numbers of  moth remain high. For ongoing control, it is advised to replace the sachets every four weeks.

Can I Store The Trichogramma Wasps?

As the wasps will hatch at ambient temperatures it is recommended that you do not store these sachets. It is best to use them as soon as they arrive and order repeat sachets every 4 weeks. Please contact us contact us directly if you would like to commit to a particular Carnation Tortrix Moth Egg Killer programme.

Establish Complete Carnation Tortrix Moth Control By Also Using Our Traps

It is also recommended that you first introduce our adult Carnation Tortrix Moth Traps to assist in controlling infestations. The traps will contribute to reducing the number of adult male moths and prevent some moths from breeding. The traps also provide a visual indication of infestation levels.

Please do not release the Trichogramma wasps close to the traps. They will not be attracted to the traps but may fly in by accident. Place the sachets away from where you have set up your traps.
