Carrot Root Fly Trap

What Are Carrot Root Flies?

The Carrot Root Fly (Psila rosae) can be a severe pest to Carrot crops. Adult Carrot Root Fly emerge from pupae in the soil from April and will then lay fresh eggs. Those eggs will hatch into creamy coloured larvae after about 7 days, depending on the weather. The larvae will move through the soil to the Carrot plants and start feeding on the roots, eventually burrowing into the Carrot roots forming mines. The first symptoms are a reddening of the Carrot leaves, which start to wiltThe larvae will leave carrots with extensive damage and disfiguration

How Do I Identify Carrot Root Flies?

The Carrot Root Fly is small, measuring 5-8mm in length, and has a black body with a yellow head. The flies have red eyes and pale yellow legs, with clear coloured wings. Eggs are laid in the soil surface around the Carrot plants.

How Does This Trap Help Combat Carrot Root Flies?

Our Carrot Root Fly Traps will help monitor Carrot Root Fly populations, and reduce the number of egg laying adults by catching them on specially coloured sticky traps, which acts as an attractant.

Adult Carrot Root Flies can also be controlled using our Carrot Root Fly Killer Nematodes.

When Should I Use The Trap?

There are normally two generations of Carrot Root fly a year. For best results set up the trap just prior to the start of each generation which are from May to June and August to October.

How Do I Set Up The Trap?

1.Slide the securing spring on top of the field pole. The spring should move easily up and down the pole when the arms of the spring are pulled apart slightly.

2. Hang one sticky trap onto the spring by the holes (sticky side down) and secure this to the pole at a 45° angle with the use of the fixing clip.

3. The trap can should be placed just above the height of the crop. The trap can be raised by sliding the spring up the pole as the crop grows.

How Long Do The Traps Last?

The sticky traps should be replaced when filled with caught pests, dust and debris. This is vital to ensure maximum capture rates. Retain the field pole and clips for use over repeat crops and seasons. Please contact us if wishing to purchase the replacement sticky traps required for this trap.
