What Are Vine Weevils?

Vine weevils are one of the most destructive garden pests. Adult Vine weevils are nocturnal and can travel quite long distances to infest your plants. All adult Vine weevils are females and can lay high numbers of eggs that develop into Vine weevil larvae. It is these larvae that can cause the most devastating damage to a wide range of plants as they feed on plant roots. The larvae will kill plants by continued feeding on the roots, and plants may appear as if they need watering when they are infested. Adult Vine weevil will also feed on the leaves of plants and damage will show as notches, or half-moon shaped cuts on the edges of leaves.

What Are Vine Weevil Killer Nematodes & How Can They Help?

Naturally and safely control your Vine weevil infestation with our Vine Weevil Killer Nematodes which are deadly to the Vine weevil larvae but safe to humans and wildlife. Vine Weevil Killer will either contain nematodes from the Steinernema species, which are active all year round, or the Heterorhabditis bacteriophora species in the summer months. These nematodes enter the larvae via a natural opening, such as the mouth, and feed on the contents of the larvae. A natural bacterium is produced by the nematodes inside the larvae, which kills it. Infected larvae will be completely broken down by the nematodes. The nematodes also reproduce inside the larvae, releasing more nematodes into the surrounding area.

Use Small Garden Vine Weevil Killer To Combat Vine Weevil Larvae Found On Individual Plants Or Within Smaller Surface Areas

Our Small Garden Vine Weevil Killer Nematodes are ideal for those looking to treat a small number of individual plants, or a smaller infestation surface area.

We have two unit options available to purchase:

- 10 Square Metre Pack which includes 5 Million Nematodes

- 20 Square Metre Pack which includes 10 Million Nematodes

When Should I Apply The Nematodes?

We advise applications of Vine Weevil Killer Nematodes between January and May, and again from August to October for outdoor applications. For indoor applications, where there is heating, Vine weevil larvae may be found all year round so treat when required.

Soil, or compost, temperatures should be above 8℃ for optimum application.

In cooler conditions, in the spring and late autumn, Vine Weevil Killer contains a nematode that continues to be active in lower soil, or compost, temperatures. In the summer months Vine Weevil Killer may be supplied with an an alternate nematode species that is only active in higher temperatures.

How Many Nematodes Do I Need?

These Small Garden range pack sizes have been specifically designed to treat areas of up to 10 and 20 square metres. This makes the packs more suited for treating smaller gardens, and individual plants, or for targeted treatment of particular sites of infestation.

If looking to treat larger lawns, or heavier infestations of Vine Weevil, see our standard sized Vine Weevil Killer Nematodes which are available in 4 larger treatment sizes.

What Conditions Do The Nematodes Require?

Choose a humid or wet day to apply your Vine Weevil Killer Nematodes. Nematodes are UV-sensitive and will not survive long when exposed to bright, sunny conditions. Apply the nematodes early in the morning or early in the evening in order to utilise the optimum humidity levels. Ensure the soil is moist at time of application.

How Do I Apply The Nematodes?

(The following instruction measurements apply to the 10m2 pack)

1. Open pack and empty entire contents into 0.5 litres of lukewarm water in a bucket. Mix and break up any lumps. This ensures even distribution of nematodes in solution.

2. Take 0.5 litres of solution and add to watering can with up to 10 litres of clean water. One pack will make 1 watering can (including concentrate solution).

3. Apply to pots, seed trays or open beds using a coarse rose/nozzle. One watering can treat up to 10 square metres. The nematodes can also be applied with some hose end feeder / nematode applicators & sprayers such as our Nema Super Sprayer.

Water area / pots treated after use and keep moist for a week after application. Repeat application, if required, every four weeks until no more Vine Weevil larvae present.

Full application instructions are provided on delivery.

Where Should I Apply The Nematodes?

These tiny microscopic nematodes can be watered into pots and containers. They can also be applied to raised beds, flower beds and borders.

Can I Store Nematodes?

You can store unopened nematode packs in a fridge but it is best to ensure you apply your nematodes as soon as possible for the best results.

Very easy to apply

So far, I can only comment on the quick delivery, clear instructions and ease of application. It's too early to say whether the population of vine weevils will go down, but I've had quite good results by applying the same nematode species around this time, or a little bit later for the last few years and I feel the numbers of weevils has decreased. We haven't had significant root damage recently and the leaf notching is nowhere near as bad as it was before we started the applications. We go on a weevil hunt each evening in the summer and this year we've been and getting between none and five, but we were previously getting a dozen each night.
