What Are Viburnum Beetles?

Viburnum beetles (Pyrrhalta viburni) will damage and defoliate a wide range of Viburnum plant species. Most of the damage, however, is caused by the Viburnum larvae. The larvae are creamy yellow with black markings, around 8mm long, and will quickly shred leaves of Viburnums. The damaged leaves will become discoloured with brown edges forming. Infested Viburnum plants can also produce an unpleasant odour when the foliage is wet.

What Are Viburnum Beetle Killer Nematodes & How Can They Help?

Naturally and safely control your Viburnum Beetle infestation with our Viburnum Beetle Killer nematodes, which are deadly to the Viburnum Beetle larvae but safe to humans and wildlife. Dragonfli Viburnum Beetle Killer contains Steinernema carpocapsae nematodes. These nematodes enter the larvae via a natural opening, like the mouth, and feed on the contents of the larvae. A natural bacterium is produced by the nematodes inside the larvae, which kills it. Infected larvae will be completely broken down by the nematodes. The nematodes also reproduce inside the larvae, releasing more nematodes into the surrounding area.

When Should I Apply The Nematodes?

The larvae are normally active and present between April to June. This is the best period in which to apply Viburnum Killer Nematodes, which should be sprayed directly onto the Viburnum Beetle larvae.

How Many Nematodes Do I Need?

The Viburnum Beetle Killer Nematodes are supplied as either:

- 1 x 25 Million nematodes to treat up to 35m2 of Viburnum shrubs.

- 2 x 25 million nematodes to treat up to 70m2 of Viburnum shrubs.

What Conditions Do The Nematodes Require?

Choose a humid or wet day to apply your Viburnum Beetle Killer Nematodes. Nematodes are UV-sensitive and will not survive long when exposed to bright, sunny conditions. Apply the nematodes early in the morning or early in the evening in order to utilise the optimum humidity levels. Avoid application in frosty conditions.

How Do I Apply The Nematodes?

1. Ensure Viburnum Beetle larvae are present on the plants. Then first, open and empty the contents of your 25 million sachet of nematodes into a bucket or container of 2.5 litres of water and mix thoroughly.

2. Next, fill your sprayer (hand held sprayers should suffice, with filters removed, or use our Nema Super Sprayer for optimum nematode application) with the mixed 2.5 litres of nematode concentrate and add another 5.5 litres of water so you are left with 8 litres of nematode solution.

3. Finally, apply and spray the Viburnum Beetle Killer solution directly onto the Viburnum Beetle larvae on the infected plants.

Repeat these instructions for an introduction of a second nematode sachet application 7 days after the first application.

Repeat applications may be required for severe infestations.

Full application instructions are provided on delivery.

Can I Store Nematodes?

You can store unopened nematode packs in a fridge but it is best to ensure you apply your nematodes as soon as possible for the best results.

A great way to treat pests

Was looking for a way to control the pest on my bay tree and was reluctant to use chemical pesticides. The information available on the website was really helpful and made the task simple. Love the sprayer too!

Seems to have worked quickly

We have a large viburnum hedge (which also suffers from canker) and the beetle has been very difficult to manage. We hope using these nematodes and F&V to get a better hedge in future. Am sure you would need to use nematodes so regularly though as a large hedge is hard to treat with a sprayer.

Vibernum beetle nematodes

Easy to use and simple instructions on where to use it. I found that it killed about half of the very heavy infestation of larvae, so had to do it again, and that killed another half again. You need to really take the time to spray all the leaves both underneath and on top to make contact with the larvae for it to work. still some survived, so i ended up cutting the shrub back quite severely to make sure i got them all and burnt the offcuts. Hopefully it will recover! in future i will use the nematodes after i have pruned back the shrub so it is easier to cover everything.

My beautiful snowball viburnum getting ravished by weevils

My approx 45 year old snowball viburnum has been getting ravished by grubs these last few years.
I had it cut right down a few years ago which seemed to help. But they came back.
Since then I've been hypervigilant, picking the pests off and killing the little b*****s as much as possible. This has helped and I've had one of the best years for beautiful big white snowballs this year.
Gave it a liquid feed, the stuff in the blue bottle, and the white snowballs have gradually turned to pink. My pride and joy.
Anyway, lots of grubs again. Out every morning, picking them off.
Desperate so I thought I would try this.
Being female, a bit queasy spraying worms around, even though cant see them.
But, seems to have done the trick.
Can't see any more and its now towards the end of May.
After 2 weeks decided to give it another blast.
Hoping its got the grubs in the ground.
Probably wont be able to stop them completely.
Love my snowball bush.
