Mushroom Fly

What are Mushroom Flies?

Mushroom Flies consist of two fly species including the Phoridand the commonly known Sciarid Fly. Adult flies are often found in proximity to the cropping area, or on the compost surface. Eggs are predominately lain near developing mycelium in the mushroom compost. Mushroom Flies are sensitive to temperature conditions and unable to fly when temperatures are below 12°C.

Mushroom Fly Infestation Signs & Symptoms

Mushroom Flies are highly active in light conditions and can be identified by their jerky, erratic movements. They are attracted to the scent of developing fungi and, if left untreated, can severely deplete mushroom yields. Eggs lain in the crop will hatch into Mushroom Fly larvae, legless, cream coloured maggots, that feed on the mycelium. Recent statistics have revealed that Mushroom Flies have caused yield losses of up to 40% in the UK.

How To Control Mushroom Flies

Place our dedicated Mushroom Fly Traps in the vicinity of your Mushroom crop to catch large numbers of the pest and to provide you with a monitoring tool for infestation levels. Our Fungus Fly Killer Nematodes can also be watered into the soil of your crop, enabling the nematodes to seek out and kill the harmful Mushroom Fly larvae.
