Leek Moths (Acrolepiopsis assectella) lay eggs that develop into larvae. The larvae, or caterpillars, will cause white patches to develop on leeks. These patches are the result of the caterpillars feeding on the foliage. More mature caterpillars will also bore into the stems of leeks.
The Dragonfli Leek Moth Pheromone Trap uses a species specific pheromone lure to catch and trap male Leek Moths. The Leek Moths will detect the pheromone and fly into the trap expecting a female Leek moth to be present. Moth mating and egg laying will be reduced as a result, and future generations of larvae will be prevented from developing. Moth populations can also be monitored through this trap which will help provide you with an early warning as to their activity.
Each trap is supplied with two pheromone lures, one for each generation of Leek Moths in the year. Simply remove the lure from the foil sachet and place it in the cage at the top of the trap.
The Leek Moth trap supplied by Dragonfli is called a castellation trap where the entry holes on the trap are only big enough for moths. This prevents the capture of larger insects, or small birds, which might fly into a conventional trap by accident.
Place the supplied circular sticky pad at the bottom of the trap to contain and kill the caught moths. Alternatively, the trap can be filled with water so when Leek Moths are trapped they will fall into the water and drown.
Suspend the traps just above the leek plants you wish to treat for infestation. Full set up instructions are provided on delivery.
The trap can be used for years and replacement lures can be purchased for additional coverage. The lures are designed to last an entire Leek Moth flying season.
Each trap comes with two pheromone lures. If you require replacement lures, you can find these here.
You may also wish to purchase some replacement Sticky Pads, which can be found here. Additional lures may also be stored in a fridge or freezer.
A pack of replacement small parts for this trap can be found here.
Each trap can cover a large crop of leek plants, and up to 250m2.
Leek Moths have two generations and your traps should be set up during or, ideally, before the arrival of each generation. The Leek Moths are active between May and June, with a second larger generation arriving between August and October.
