The Pantry Moth, otherwise known as the Indian Meal Moth (Plodia interpunctella) is a pest of stored food products. The larvae of the moth feed on cereals, flour, bread, snacks and other dried stored foods. This makes the food inedible and requiring disposal. The first indication of the pest can be the presence of silken webs in such foods. The Pantry Moth larvae are of whitish-yellow colouring, with a brown head, and can crawl through small openings in packaging and cardboard containers. Female moths can lay up to 400 eggs which will hatch in seven days in warm conditions. The larvae will then seek for food stuffs to feed on. Pantry Moths can produce up to eight generations a year.
Trichogramma are very small parasitic wasps, hard to spot with the naked eye, but identifiable when they are situated on the outside of the packaging. They will seek out Pantry Moth eggs and lay their own eggs inside them, parasitising the Pantry Moth eggs. They are harmless to humans and animals and remain only for as long as there are Moth eggs present. Our Pantry Moth Egg Killer Sachets can be used to combat a wide variety of moth pest species that also include the Clothes / Carpet Moth, Box Tree Moth and the Carnation Tortrix Moth.
Our new Pantry Moth Egg Killer Sachets have been designed for improved and longer lasting control of Pantry Moth and other moth eggs.
Pantry Moth Egg Killer is supplied in a sachet containing the eggs of the tiny parasitic wasp: Trichogramma evanescens. Theses eggs hatch from the sachet over a period of 2-4 weeks releasing a continual supply of adult parasitic wasps into the surrounding area. The sachet has been developed with a focus on timed emergence with 2000 wasps emerging each week. It will usually take 2-3 days for the first adults to emerge.
The longer lasting hatch rate increases the ability of the parasitic wasps to locate more moth eggs, and at that the correct time for when they can be successfully parasitised and killed. The Pantry Moth Egg Killer Sachets also release 3x the amount of parasitic wasps than the previously sold Trichogramma Cards.
Pantry Moths are most commonly identified in food storage areas, and our sachets can be effectively applied when placed horizontally amidst food storage shelves and other household food storage areas.
Recent research has shown that the Trichogramma parasitic wasps like to fly upwards when they emerge from the sachets. For this reason the sachet has been designed without a hook so that it can be laid flat. The wasps will walk out of the sachets first and spread out horizontally before they fly, so by placing the sachets horizontally and ensuring there is sufficient space above the sachet for them to emerge, effective results will be achieved.
The sachets are supplied with a release hole on the top of the sachet, which is marked and already open. There is no need to open or cut the sachet.
To prevent further potential Pantry Moth activity, ensure food storage areas are cleaned on a regular basis and food is stored in plastic, sealable, containers.
Pantry Moths can be active all year round at indoor temperatures, and so too can these wasps. The trichogramma wasps require temperatures between 15-35℃ and will be able to combat re-emerging infestations of the Pantry Moth larvae throughout the year.
The Trichogramma pupae are supplied in a paper sachet. Place the sachet on a horizontal surface at the site of infestation. Please be careful not to block the emergence hole. The wasps will emerge from inside the sachet and seek out the moth eggs.
As the small adult wasps tend to fly upwards, place the sachet low.
Please do not open the sachets since the sachets are supplied with an emergence hole. Please also do not place objects on top of the sachets as you may damage the pupae inside.
Please also ensure no chemical treatments have been used at 2 weeks prior to the introduction of Trichogramma.
From each sachet 6000 parasitic wasps will emerge over a period of four weeks. One sachet will cover an area of 25m2.
We advise you to check pest numbers after application and consider applying more Trichogramma if numbers of moth remain high. For ongoing control, it is advised to replace the sachets every four weeks.
As the wasps will hatch at ambient temperatures it is recommended that you do not store these sachets. It is best to use them as soon as they arrive and order repeat sachets every 4 weeks. It is also recommended that you first introduce our adult Pantry Moth Traps to assist in controlling infestations. The traps will contribute to reducing the number of adult male moths and prevent some moths from breeding. The traps also provide a visual indication of infestation levels.
Please do not release the Trichogramma wasps close to the traps. They will not be attracted to the traps but may fly in by accident and become stuck on the glue inside. Place the sachets away from where you have set up your traps.
