How Do I Set Up & Utilise The Lodge?

Ensure your lodge is hung securely on a wall, fence or tree, or placed in a greenhouse on a firm, flat surfaceIf you have opted to receive Live Ladybirds, or larvae, with your lodge, they can be released alongside the lodge whereby they may enter it via any the four elongated horizontal notches on the front.

The hinged slot to the side of the lodge can also be opened if wishing to place the Ladybirds, or larvae, directly inside the lodge. This slot also enables you to fill the inside of your lodge with rose cuttings, twigs and straw to provide a safe haven for other beneficial insects in your garden.

Once inside, the ladybirds will freely venture out of the lodge to feed on a variety of garden insect pests including Aphids

Ladybirds will predominantly consume most species of Aphid, but may also feed on other soft-bodied pests such as Spider Mite and Thrip. We would, however, advise use of more specific predators in tackling these pests.

Used in the greenhouse, got about 17 live ladybirds, after 2 weeks can only see about 7 left, still lots of aphids left. Amazing to watch them appear though.

Hi Alicia,

Many thanks for your feedback and for ordering with us.

It sounds like your Ladybirds flew off rather promptly! Apologies for this, it's an outcome that is always possible when applying winged predators outdoors unfortunately.

Adult Ladybirds are best suited for application onto Aphid infested plants in confined spaces such as greenhouses, conservatories and polytunnels. They can still be released outdoors but are difficult to apply directly to specific infestations because, as you've seen, they may simply choose to fly away!

Alternatively, Ladybird larvae, which are not winged, are easier to apply when treating targeted outdoor infestations as they will remain in closer proximity to where they have been released.

I hope this helps but of course if you ever need any further advice please just give us a shout and we'd be more than happy to help.

Kind regards,

Julian Ives [Director, Dragonfli]

House is well made

The house is well made and good quality. But so far this year there have been no greenfly/blackfly - so I presume all the ladybirds have flown!
