Leatherjacket Killer 50 square metres contains enough nematodes to treat a lawn area up to 50 square metres in size. The pack contains 25 million  Steinernema carpocapsae nematodes, which are the most effective species for summer and early autumn control of Leatherjacket larvae. Leatherjackets are the larvae of Crane flies, more comonly known in the UK as Daddy Long Legs. These larvae are brown in colour and eat the roots of turf and grass. This leads to the grass death and large yellow patches appearing in the lawn. Secondary damage can also occur from birds and wildlife digging up the lawn to look for the Leatherjacket larvae to eat.

The most effective time to apply Leatherjacket Killer is in the late summer after Daddy Long eggs have laid fresh eggs that have developed into Leatherjacket larvae. This normally occurs from August-October.

Nematodes need a moist soil to be able to penetrate the surface and to move through the soil to attack Leatherjackets. Once the nematodes find the larvae, they enter the larvae excreting a bacteria that kills the Leatherjacket and turns the Leatherjacket into a food that the nematodes can feed and breed in. Infected Leatherjacket larvae will die within days. It is important to ensure the soil beneath the grass is moist prior to application of nematodes and to keep it moist for a few days afterwards. Avoid applying in very bright conditions as the nematodes are UV sensitive.

One pack of Leatherjacket killer will make up enough solution to treat a lawn area of 50 square metres. Once the pack is opened it must be used all at once. Un-opened packs can be stored in a fridge for a few days or up to  2 weeks. Leatherjacket Killer will normally need repeating each year.

Leatherjacket Killer provides;

  • A safe, non-chemical solution to this damaging lawn pest
  • Wildlife friendly, safe to dogs, pets and children
  • Leatherjackets cannot build up resistance to nematodes
