Ladybird & Lacewing Habitats

Ladybirds belong to the insect order; Coleoptera, which are beetles and have their own family group within the classification of beetles called Coccinellidae. There are 26 species in the UK and in recent times this has been added to by the non-native Ladybird, the Harlequin, which originates from Asia. For a detailed guide to the UK species, try looking at the FSC Guide to Ladybirds of the British Isles, available in the shop area of the Dragonfli website.

Ladybirds are very effective predators of aphids [ greenfly and blackfly ] and some other other horticultural insect pests. The adults and larvae of Ladybirds will consume large amounts of aphids. The preservation of the native species in the UK is very important and can be helped with the creation of wildlife friendly areas and habitats.

LADYBIRD BAG SYSTEM FOR TREES & SHRUBS

Aphid colonies in trees can cause problems with the honeydew they produce. This often drips down onto surfaces and objects like cars beneath trees. This creates a sticky mess that mould can also grow on. Dragonfli supply a bag system for applying Ladybird larvae to trees and large shrubs. The cotton bags are pinned to the trees allowing ladybird larvae to crawl out and consume huge amounts of aphid, which significantly reduces the aphid populations.
