INSECT HOTELS

Insect hotels are a great way to help beneficial insects thrive and survive in gardens and other areas where wildlife is present. A variety  of insects may use them. Insect hotels and habitats can help with natural pest control in the garden by providing winter homes for insects like Ladybirds and Lacewings. Pollination of fruit and flowers is helped with the provision of insect hotels and habitats, as pollinators like mason bees need egg laying sites. You can try to make your own insect hotels from wood, bark, straw and bamboo canes or buy ready made ones from Dragonfli.

Try also to make gardens and wildlife areas abundant in plants that produce masses of pollen and nectar, as many of the insects that Insect Hotels will help also need pollen or nectar.

  • Solitary bees - long tubes in habitats often provide ideal egg laying sites for a variety of solitary bee specioes. Solitary bees are important pollinators of fruit and other plants. If constructing or buying a Solitary bee habitat ensure that it is facing south to south east, otherwise the solitary bees are unlikely to lay their eggs there.

Make sure your Ladybird house are in place by the autumn, as this is the time that Ladybirds will start looking for sites to overwinter in.
  • Lacewings - another predator of aphids aloso like to overwinter as adults. The larvae of Lacewings are very effective predators.
