Mealybug are often found on plants grown in greenhouses or conservatories, especially on succelents and cacti. They have a white fluffy appearance and produce a waxy film to cover their eggs. Plants with mealybugs become sticky and are prone to sooty moulds growing on them.

Biological or natural pest control of them can be acheived using the predatory Ladybird; Cryptolaemus montrouzieri. The larvae of the Cryptolaemus is an effective predator of all stages of the mealybug life cycle. It has no wings at this stage of its life cycle so can be placed directly onto the mealybugs. It will then feed on them before developing into an adult beetle, which will then continue to feed on the mealybugs. During its life cycle a Cryptolaemus larvae can consume up to 250 mealybugs.

The optimum temperatures for the Mealybug predators is between 22-25C and they should not be introduced when temperatures are below 14C.

Apply 5-10 per plant depending on the level of infestation. Repeat applications maybe required if the mealybug population is already established in high numbers. Mealybug predator larvae are supplied in packs of 25 larvae. Please note the larvae are similar in appearance to the mealybug, so it is advised you study them before applying to familarize yourself with the predators.

Do not use pesticides before or during the use of the Cryptolaemus.

Last chance to treat Leatherjacket larvae

This short, fat leatherjacket  larvae does a lot of damage to lawns from August through to the end of October. The recent warm weather does enable later applications but should not be delayed to long now.

Once you have evidence of this grub under your grass, it is time to apply nematodes.

Available in many sizes -  100m2, 500m2 , these nematodes will seek out and destroy Leatherjacket larvae within 14 days of use. Can be applied by watering can or hose end nozzle.

This is a natural solution for leatherjackets in lawns. Leatherjackets are the larvae of crane flies, otherwise known as Daddy-long-Legs. The majority of the eggs are laid late summer and develop into Leatherjacket larvae in the late summer- early autumn.

Stop these horrible pests ruining your lawn by using a biological control.
