Ladybird larvae in bags [ 250] provides an alternative to pesticide treatments for aphid control in trees and large shrubs. The Ladybird larvae are a UK native species; Adalia bipunctata. Once they have developed into adults they are known as the two spot Ladybird.

Aphids reproduce at a rapid rate, sucking sap out of plants and excreting  honeydew. This sticky substance can cover areas under trees and shrubs, often covering cars and monuments beneath. The honeydew also grows grey un-sightly moulds. Aphids also transmit plant viruses. To reduce the damage aphids do to trees and the subsequent production of honeydew, Ladybird larvae can be introduced to trees and shrubs by  pinning cotton bags to the trunks of the trees. The Ladybird larvae crawl out and feed for two to three weeks on the aphids before pupating and developing into adult Ladybirds. The larvae can consume up to 100 aphids a day each!

Application is easy by pinning the bags to the tree trunk and a guide rate of application can be worked out by the diameter of the tree;

20-50cm : 1 bag of 250 larvae

50cm plus : 2 bags of 250 larvae

The application of the Ladybird larvae should be when aphids are present but before they are in high numbers. Often aphids will build up in May, so this is a good period to introduce the Ladybird larvae.

Bumblebee deliveries

Our 2017 bumblebee delivery season has begun!

Still time to order your live colony, as we are delivering though to mid-July.

If you already have Beepol Villa or Queen Beehive, you will only need to order the bees this year.

As usual, we will be pre-treating the cardboard with B401 to protect against wax moth attacks, but you will need to treat the wood on the Villa or Queen Beehive yourself.

If you have not had our bees before, then the Villa and bees will be delivered together with the bees in the spring ( May -July).

 The Villa 2017 also comes with a gift voucher for the large bumblebee colony making it a great present idea or can be pre-ordered  with a live colony for delivery this spring ( May - July)
