Leatherjackets are the larvae of crane flies, often known as Daddy-long -legs. Leatherjackets feed on the roots of grass. This causes significant root damage, leading to areas of yellowing grass and in severe cases root and grass death. Secondary damage from birds and animals feeding on the Leatherjacket grubs can be even more severe. Large areas of lawns and grassland can be ripped up by birds and animals as they look for the larvae to eat.

There are now no chemical insecticide treatments available in the UK for treating Leatherjacket grubs. The only solution is with the use of insect pathogenic nematodes. These nematodes are harmless to plants , birds, fish or mammals. They provide a safe and natural form of pest control for Leatherjacket larvae.

Leatherjacket Killer 500 square metres contains 250 million Steinernema carpocapsae nematodes. These nematodes are watered into lawns or grass areas, where they seek out and infect Leatherjacket  larvae. Once the nematodes enter the larvae, they release a bacteria, which kills the grub. The body is then used as a breeding site for more nematodes. It is important to apply with plenty of water and irrigation to make sure the nematodes can enter and move through the soil. Avoid application in bright and sunny days , as nematodes are U.V sensitive.

Leatherjacket Killer nematodes are not effective in the spring, so should be applied against the first generations of Leatherjacket larvae in the late summer/ early autumn. The optimum period for application is between August and October.

For a faster application of nematodes to a larger lawn area, try our Hose end feeder.

Bumblebee deliveries

Our 2017 bumblebee delivery season has begun!

Still time to order your live colony, as we are delivering though to mid-July.

If you already have Beepol Villa or Queen Beehive, you will only need to order the bees this year.

As usual, we will be pre-treating the cardboard with B401 to protect against wax moth attacks, but you will need to treat the wood on the Villa or Queen Beehive yourself.

If you have not had our bees before, then the Villa and bees will be delivered together with the bees in the spring ( May -July).

The Villa 2017 also comes with a gift voucher for the large bumblebee colony making it a great present idea or can be pre-ordered  with a live colony for delivery this spring ( May - July)
