Leatherjackets are the larvae or grub stage of Crane Flies, more commonly known in the UK as Daddy-long-legs. These insects lay their eggs in lawns, which quickly develop into Leatherjackets. These grubs are brown-grey in colour and feed on the roots of the grass. This causes yellowing areas of lawns. Roots can quicklly be killed by Leatherjackets. The Leatherjackets also attract birds and animals to feed on them, this damage can be much worse as birds like Starlings and Crows rip up lawns looking for the Leatherjackets to feed on.

There are two common species of Crane flies but the most damaging one lays its eggs normally from August onwards. These then develop into the Leatherjacket grubs. from mid August. Leatherjacket Killer nematodes should be applied to lawns at this time and before the end of October. After this the soil temperature will be to cold for the nematodes to be active.

Leatherjacket Killer nematodes are watered into the lawns and into the soil underneath. Once there the nematodes search out and kill the Leatherjacket grubs by entering them and releasing a bacteria to kill them. They are harmless to humans, pets and wildlife. Leatherjacket grubs once infected will die within a few days. They use the body to reproduce in, which releases more nematodes into the surrounding area.

Leatherjacket Killer is pre-mixed in a bucket of water and then added to a watering can for watering into the lawn. The lawn should be moist at time of application and kept moist for the next 7-10 days. This ensures the nematodes can move in the soil. Only apply Leatherjacket Killer on cloudy days, as nematodes are UV sensitive. Un-opened packs can be stored in a fridge for up two weeks but once opned it mus be used within a few hours.

Leatherjacket Killer 10 square metres contains 5 million nematodes, enough to treat a lawn up to 10 square metres in size. For severe infestations , a repeat application maybe required.
